Duke of Edinburgh's
Hillary Award

Kirikiriroa and St. Peter’s Scout Group is the only Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Unit in the Scouts New Zealand Waikato Zone. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award is available to all 14–24 year-olds, regardless of their background.  The Award has three levels, each progressively more challenging.

Bronze

Bronze is the first level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award, and you can start it in the school year that you turn 14. Bronze takes a minimum of six months to complete.

There are three specific sections—Voluntary Service, Skills and Physical Recreation—that you’ll choose your activities from, plus an Adventurous Journey to complete.

Silver

Silver is the second level of the Award, and takes a minimum of six months to complete if you have completed Bronze or 12 months if you have not completed Bronze – Direct Entry.

You can start your Silver Award as soon as you’ve completed your Bronze. If you have not completed Bronze then you must be 15 to start Silver.

There are three specific sections—Voluntary Service, Skills and Physical Recreation—that you’ll choose your activities from, plus an Adventurous Journey to complete.

Gold

Gold is the third and final level of the Award, and takes a minimum of 12 months to complete. If you have not completed Bronze and Silver there are extra requirements.

You can start your Gold Award from the age of 16.

There are three specific sections—Voluntary Service, Skills and Physical Recreation—that you’ll choose your activities from, plus an Adventurous Journey and a Gold Residential Project (a Gold-only section) to complete.

Participants are required to complete four sections at each level: Voluntary Service, Skills, Physical Recreation, and Adventurous Journey. At Gold level, participants also complete a Residential Project.

Scouts can achieve the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award alongside the Chief Scout Award.

Venturers can achieve the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award alongside the Bronze Venturer Award, the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award alongside the Silver Venturer Award and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award alongside the Gold Venturer Award.

Rovers can achieve the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award alongside the St. George Award.
